More About SCRA
A place to get away, without going far, Stanford Campus Recreation Association is located in the heart of Stanford’s residential campus. Tennis courts, pool and clubhouse welcome member faculty and staff families to relax and enjoy time together.
Our club name reflects our core values:
Our swimming and tennis programs emphasize high standards and the qualities that constitute sportsmanship; honesty, integrity and humility.
We strive to promote a strong sense of community within our club reflecting the special culture of Stanford.
Informal recreation in the form of events, clubs and parties is
encouraged to foster a friendly and fun atmosphere.
Physical activity engenders a sense of well-being and good health –
a welcome complement to the academic focus of our Stanford community.
SCRA was founded in 1962 by a group of Stanford faculty and staff who wished to develop community swim and tennis facilities, with the goals of fostering high standards of sportsmanship and promoting fellowship among faculty and senior staff. There were many new families living on campus due to the recent completion of the Pine Hill 1 housing area who were eager to enjoy this family-friendly facility.
The pool, locker rooms, and clubhouse opened that year and the first two tennis courts were constructed the following year. Five additional tennis courts were added within the next several years.
In the early years, the club primarily operated on a seasonal basis with the pool open annually from April to October. In 1975 the club converted to year-round operation, with both swim and tennis facilities, and related programs, busy in every season.
On September 5th, 2009 after a year-long major renovation SCRA re-opened it doors to a brand new two-story clubhouse with Fitness Room, Community Room, additional bathrooms upstairs with locker rooms & office downstairs. The pool was expanded to 11 lanes 25 yards by 25 meters in length with a separate baby pool and future possibilities of a third three-lane lap pool. The seven existing tennis courts all were resurfaced with modifications to the fence and lighting of three courts. The 3.2 acre facility was upgraded with perimeter fencing and landscaping throughout. This was all possible by a generous donation from a private donor and university loan to the club.
As part of the University under the management of the Department of Athletics Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) is a member’s only club. SCRA continues to be a family-oriented, welcoming community for qualifying faculty and staff families. We pride ourselves on our wide variety of adult and junior teams with lessons in both swimming and tennis.
