Learn from and work with horses at the Stanford Red Barn
Horse offers Stanford students the unique opportunity to work with horses at the historical Stanford Red Barn. Courses focus on learning how to understand and communicate with horses through both riding and unmounted horse care. Through this work, students should gain not only a better understanding of horses, but also skills to help with their own wellness.
Purpose
We educate, motivate and support Stanford students to live a healthy, active lifestyle that supports belonging and wellbeing.
Goals:
Through working with horses in different ways, our goal is for students to learn how to communicate with horses and through that, help students on their wellness journey. Horses see and interact with the world in a completely different way than humans. As students learn to see the world the way horses do, they also learn a new way to interact with their own surroundings to help students manage stress, socially engage, embrace challenges, and practice presence.
Framework:
Education: Learn new skills
Application: Apply these skills, insights, and learnings into your interactions with horses, others, and yourself.
Safety: The safety of horses and riders is paramount to all interactions.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding how to interact with horses in a way that is safe for all parties.
- Learning and developing communication skills for positive outcomes.
- Correctly execute skills, whether mounted or unmounted, in relation to the activity level.
- Recognize the importance of an environment that encourages wellbeing for horses, themselves, and others.
